Bad Lighting: what it is, and how to correct it | Chapel Hill Photographer

Today I thought I’d tackle another reader question from my Facebook query a little while ago. This one’s from Ali (Thanks Ali! Starbucks GC coming your way!): Q: Is there an idiot-proof way to make photos come out decent when you’re stuck in really bad lighting (low-lighting, flourescents, etc.)? A: First off, I wanted to take…

Erin - See, you make it all look so easy but it’s posts like these that make me realise all the skill and thought that goes into getting those amazing shots!

Joda - Informative post. You are amazing for all the information you so lucidly convey. Thank you.

Ali - Awesome, that makes it a lot clearer. Now I have a better idea of how to deal with the horrible fluorescent lighting in our kitchen when I’m taking shots for our blog. Thanks, Annemie!

Red Letter Day | Chapel Hill Photographer

Days like this just don’t come along very often… today I got two completely separate pieces of news, both of which represent major milestones in my photography career. I’m so excited I had to share, but be forewarned: there’s a bit of my-own-horn-tooting ahead First, I got word that an article I submitted last spring…

Bert - How utterly exciting! I’ve long been a great fan of yours and am not surprised to hear that publication (book and periodical) editors think so also. And these selections, coming from photographic professionals, is truly complimentary. Well deserved! Good job! Keep up the good work. My guess: boy laughing.

Meg - you go, girl!!! you are having a record-setting month! :) I’m so, so happy for you. the article is very well written and you really hit your mark with giving exposure but not sounding promo-y. and while I love the first pic, my vote for pure laughter is the second. :) !

Annemie - Thanks, everyone! I know this sounds hokey, (and perhaps overly-dramatic, given that I’m not exactly accepting an Nobel prize here) but I seriously couldn’t have done any of this without your support and encouragement, which has been an amazing constant in my photography journey :D

5 Techniques for Creating Better Portraits (for free!) | Chapel Hill Portrait Photographer

Thank you all for your feedback on the new site! I’ve known for months that it needed to be updated, but a new website is not a small job, and I’ll admit I kept putting it off. For better or for worse, my hand was forced two weeks ago when my oh-so-well-meaning husband accidentally hit the “publish”…

Jenn - Despite knowing a bit about photography, these are great tips to improve my photos. I didn’t know about how to shoot wide open with a point and shoot, the importance of posing people at 45 degrees to the camera, or about shooting women from above and men from below. Thanks Annemie!

joda - What an informative, well written posting. Your posts are always well written and informative, but this one steals the show for info for photographers. I know I’ll use the techniques (if I can remember them) the next time I take someone’s photo. Thank you.

Annemie - So glad these were helpful! Even though I know and practice all of these techniques on a daily basis, it’s always fun to challenge myself on one in particular… say finding great color combinations or getting a set of portraits with totally different expressions.

Erin - Fantastic tips! (and gorgeous photos too)
Thanks!

kate - Your tips on posing, background and light are great. Your ability to bring so much valuable information into focus matches your wonderful photography! Thanks for sharing both!!

Rachel - Thanks, Annemie! I just ordered a book on taking better photos and video with my iphone. Once I know the best apps and all that to use, I’ll certainly be putting your tips to work! Thanks again for all your great posts!
